Music Makes a Difference

Have you ever heard a catchy tune? Went on with your day and hummed that same one hours later? We all know the answer because we all have! Music is everywhere. Most of the people in my life, myself included, don’t even have a favorite song. I believe this is common because there is such a variety of artists and genres, all too good to singularly pick from. Don’t worry, this piece isn’t going to undermine the ongoing feud between RnB and Hip Hop or flash the heading: “Calling All Swifties,” but will instead highlight the importance of all music for all ages.

To begin, music isn’t just something you tap your foot to in a store or hear through a fresh pair of AirPods. Music is community. From groupies to Grammy nominees and experts to Emmy winners, people are brought together by tune. Over $9.2 billion are paid to attend concerts in a year in the United States. Why might this statistic convince you to join the community? Well, it shows just how large the community is in which many people beyond average concertgoers are part of it for free. Choirs, marching bands, learning to play an instrument, or even karaoke, are all ways for you to be involved.

Music serves as a way to explore our interests and get out of our comfort zones. Music encourages. Music unifies. Music is nurture. In fact, I was raised being put to sleep by instrumental Coldplay songs. As unrealistic as it might sound, I to this day have a strong emotional connection anytime I hear one of the top hits like ‘Yellow’ or ‘Clocks.’ Soft lullabies can be introduced to younger audiences and hold a staple in their life as something that serves as a comfort for when reminiscing.

When going through life, music can be one of the only constants. It allows us to feel emotions: happiness, sadness, nostalgia, even ambition. Whether that’s through heavy metal or girly pop, or anywhere in between, we can unite and use the power of instruments and each other to find a common interest. We can get excited as our favorite artists release new content or win awards; maybe we will even become our own favorite artists. Now that’s music to my ears.
